Physical Education - GCSE

The GCSE course consists of:

Paper 1 - Theory element (40%)

  • Healthy, active lifestyles and how they could benefit you.
  • Influences on your healthy, active lifestyle.
  • Exercise and fitness as part of your healthy, active lifestyle.
  • Physical activity as part of your healthy, active lifestyle.
  • Your personal health and well being.
  • Healthy, active lifestyle and your cardiovascular system.
  • Healthy, active lifestyle and your respiratory system.
  • Healthy, active lifestyle and your muscular system.
  • Healthy, active lifestyle and your skeletal system.
  • Physical activity and your healthy mind and body

 Paper 2 - Practical element (50%)

Students are required to offer four performances, in practical contexts, in the role of either player / participant, official or leader. At least two of the four performances must be in the role of player / participant. The four sports are marked out of ten; each sport is worth ten percent of their overall grade. Some of the sporting areas you can choose from are; football, rugby, climbing, lifesaving, basketball, fitness, athletics, rounders and netball. If you participate and excel in any areas that aren't studied during the two years of the course, you can still enter those sports for the practical exam, (see full list of sports sheet).


Paper 3 - Analysis of performance/coursework (10%)
The coursework element: Each pupil has to choose one of their four final assessment sports, and produce a 6 week training programme. Pupils will cover the supporting work during lesson time, and work independently to produce the 6 week Personal Exercise Plan (PEP)

You also need to understand the techniques and principles behind different sports and activities in the analysis of performance section.

BTEC PE.
This is an enjoyable course and has been one of the top performing courses in the last few years, The course is hard work, but is well balanced between theory and practical. The course is split into three parts, theory, practical and a short piece of coursework.

The sort of things you might learn on the course:

  • How do your muscles work?
  • Where are the locations of the major organs in the body?
  • How do you identify and treat minor injuries?
  • How will football players recover from their injuries in time for the Champions League final?
  • How many bones are there in the human body?
  • What is Fartlek training?
  • How far can I push myself on the bleep test?

Will there be an examination?
No, there are no exams, all work is based on coursework. This course is equivalent to 2 GCSE's.
