Key Stage 3 – Years 7, 8, 9

Settings arranged by tutorial groups in year 7 and ability groupings in years 8 and 9.

Assessment

Is ongoing with a profile recorded for every student and their levels of achievement.

Key Stage 4

All students in year 10 and 11 do P.E. as for years 7, 8 and 9. They can, however, elect to do P.E. for their G.C.S.E.

The G.C.S.E. P.E. practical work looks at six areas. Students must choose a minimum of two of these areas and complete four sports/events from these. The areas include GAMES, GYMNASTICS, DANCE, ATHLETICS, SWIMMING and ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITIES.

The theoretical aspects include FIRST AID, DRUG AWARENESS, SOCIOLOGY, EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY and HEALTH. The assessment is ongoing for practical whilst the theory culminates in an oral analysis and written exam at the end of year 11. Students are given great assistance through action plans and continual tasks to aid them. The subject is both challenging and rewarding. Those who elect to do P.E. as a subject in years 10 – 11 should have an attitude that is committed to excellence in P.E.

Below is a summary of G.C.S.E. P.E. assessment:

Paper 1: Written Paper: 1 hour 45 minutes – 40%

This paper is in three parts:

  • Part I – multiple-choice questions
  • Part II – short-answer questions
  • Part III – scenario questions

Candidates will be expected to attempt all the questions in each part of the paper. The specification content for this paper covers the Factors Affecting Participation and Performance and is divided into three sections:

A Exercise and Training

B Safety Aspects and Risk Assessment in Physical Activity and Sport

C Applied Anatomy and Physiology

All three sections will be covered in each part of Paper 1.

The short answer questions will require the following style of response: the labelling of diagrams; the supplying of missing information; the interpretation or the presentation of information on graphs, and factual recall.

Where candidates are asked to explain, marks will be awarded for the provision of accurate reasons to support the explanation. Where candidates are required to define, marks will be awarded for the accurate recall of definitions.

The scenario questions will enable candidates to apply their understanding of the theoretical content to a specific case study, linking different areas of the specification.

Paper 2: Practical Activities – 60%

Candidates will be required to offer four activities for assessment and to complete an Analysis of Performance in one of these activities.
