Exciting things have been happening in the Mathematics Department at Stewards School!

Staffed by a dedicated team of 6 teachers and a Curriculum Development Assistant, the department has recently invested in a range of new resources to improve the learning experience of Mathematics students throughout the school.

Great emphasis has been placed on new technology. The department is wireless networked and a bank of laptop computers are available exclusively to the Maths department. These are used to supplement traditional teaching methods.  Pupils are able to access a wide range of Maths software, both on the school network and on numerous Internet sites.   There is a support team of IT staff to solve technical problems, and a Curriculum Development Assistant to search out new and interesting web sites.

Interactive whiteboards are also used in Mathematics classes. These add another dimension to lessons by allowing the injection of colour, movement and sound, and encouraging active participation of the students.

Despite these exciting innovations, traditional teaching methods have not been neglected and still form the basis of Mathematics teaching throughout the school.

At key stage 3 (years 7-9) we follow Maths Frameworking Scheme of work published by Collins. The scheme is particularly valuable in that it allows for differentiation of less and more able students. A full set of textbooks is available to each class in each year, and is supplemented by books containing both more simple and more challenging examples.

The School subscribes to http://www.mymaths.co.uk website where students can take booster and revision lessons as well as complete online worksheets.

Homework is set by individual teachers as appropriate.

The OCR GCSE Mathematics scheme (published by Hodder & Stoughton) continues to be used for Key Stage 4 teaching, but has also been improved. Pupils will be offered the opportunity to purchase a Revision guide. This will be invaluable for GCSE revision.

A Student Manager team has been appointed for Mathematics.  Their role is to engage as many students as possible with Mathematical extra curricular activities:
- Maths Club - Game 24, Puzzles, to name a few.
- KS3 Homework Club
- KS4 Homework Club

Each year we enter the UKMT Junior (Years 7 & 8), and Intermediate (Years 9, 10 & 11) challenges, and we have entered a team in the UKMT Regional Team Challenge.
