KS3
Setting Arrangements
All pupils receive a double period of art every week (100 minutes) in their tutor groups. The groups are mixed ability.
Units of work covered in the 3 years at KS3:
Year 7
Unit 1-Surrealism (12 weeks)
Pupils study a variety of artists from the ‘surrealist’ art movement; these include Salvador Dali/Rene Magritte/Frieda Khalo/Paul Klee. They are taught observation drawing skills. Work produced during the unit.-self portraits in pencil and colouring pencil/collage/surrealist self-portrait using symbolism/3 week research project on surrealist artist.
Unit 2- Architecture (12 weeks)
Pupils study the work of Frederick Stawasser (Hundenwasser) and Antonio Gaudi. They learn prospective drawing, scale and proportions. Work produced during the unit-2D perspective drawing of architecture/painting of their architectural designs/3D model in relief using mixed media/ 3 minute presentation of their chosen architect.
Unit 3-Aboriginal landscapes (12 weeks)
Pupils study the work of the Aboriginal Culture. They are taught further observational drawing skills using tone/texture and pattern. Work produced during the unit- Landscape drawings in pencil, charcoal and colouring pencil/aboriginal landscape piece in mixed media/research project on the Aboriginal culture and legends.
Year 8
Unit 1 - The Day of the Dead
Pupils study the Mexican Culture & the festival of ‘The Day of The Dead.’ They compare the differences of a Western & non-western culture. Work produced in this unit- designs for a ‘Day of the Dead’ icon. / A 3D model in mixed media/ a 5 minute presentation on a Mexican festival.
Unit 2 Pop Art (13 weeks)
Pupils study the 1950’s & 60’’s ‘Pop Art’ movement of the English & American cultures. They research and compare the work and combine current social issues/citizenship- pupils look at how art can have an impact on society they compare the positive and negative influences. Work produced in this unit- 4 week project on Andy Warhol/Roy Lichtenstein/Peter Blake and the influence of their work on society/ Designs for a pop art model using advanced mark making effects/ a kinetic model in different mediums.
Unit 3 - Monsters in Art (13 weeks)
Pupils study Chinese and Greek mythical creatures and the work of Du Xinjian and Yang Yang. They are taught observational drawing skills such as tone, highlights, pattern and texture.
Work produced during the unit - A still life in shading pencils of mythical creatures / developmental pieces produced in collage / mixed media / paint and a 4 week project on a final 3D relief piece of work inspired by the Chinese and Greek art.
Pupils research, analyse and compare their findings.
Year 9-Henri Rosseau(14 weeks)
Pupils study the work of Henri Rosseau - looking at different aspects of surrealism and naive art and sculpture. Observational drawing is a very big part of this unit. Work produced in this unit - A still life drawing observing elements of nature/Styrofoam printing of natural designs/pencil/biro/collage and colouring pencil work/fabric painting/ 4 week project on a mood board researching and analysing Henri Rosseau, a 3D framed board inspired by Henri Rosseau's style of art. Students are expected to use a variety of different sources to gather independent research.
Unit 2-Public Art-Murals (14 weeks)
Pupils study the subject of public art and its impact on society (citizenship elements) and our environment. They look at the work and its impact on Harlow-artists includes Henry Moore/Antanas Brazdys/Graffiti artists. They also look at the effect of graffiti art & debate its merits, negatives & impact on its environment. Work produced in this unit - a mood sheet researching and analysing the topic/5 minute presentation on a piece of public art (PowerPoint) and a final 3D sculpture incorporating elements of ICT.
Unit 3- Mini GCSE Unit- Personal Project (8 weeks)
Pupils are given the opportunity to produce a unit of work of their choice, based around the theme of fantasy. They must produce an eight page book and front cover - this will include photographs/sketches/information on an artist linked to their theme. Pupils will produce a final piece of work in 3D that must be carefully planned and discussed with the classroom teacher.
Assessment arrangements at KS3
Each unit of work provides different opportunities for pupils to be assessed on the following areas:- Research of an artist /Culture using a variety of sources e.g.: internet/library/museums/photographs etc. Research will be marked through different activities such as mini projects/ PowerPoint presentations and art quizzes.
Analysis -Pupils are taught how to evaluate, analyse and compare the work of others and their own.
Homework’s Most homework’s are practical based and require the pupils to produce high quality sketches/drawings/collages or paintings.
KS4Setting Arrangements
Pupils are set in groups depending on their choices from their options. All groups are mixed ability. Although it is recommended that pupils are highly motivated and dedicated towards their study work.
Units of work covered:
Students are required to produce a minimum of 2 coursework units over the 2 year course. Coursework is worth 60% of the overall GCSE grade. The 3 coursework units are internally set by the art department and the students. Units 1 and 2 are based on a specific culture or art movement and is changed every year. Unit 3 is a personal project which is carefully negotiated between the students and their teacher. All students must produce at least one sketchbook per unit of research work, 5-6 A2 sheets of additional drawings/photos/paintings etc and a final finished piece of work in either 2D or 3D.
The fourth unit is set by Edexcel and this is worth 40% of the GCSE grade. Students are issued with an exam paper and must answer one of the questions, through the following criteria:-
- At least one sketchbook of research material on an artist/culture/photos/sketches/development of ideas/museum visits etc.
- In addition at least 3-6 A2 sheets of back up work.
- Pupils have a 10 hour practical exam where they produce a final 2D or 3D final piece of work.
Students have 8 weeks to prepare for the exam.
Skills covered during the 2 year course
Students are given a very broad spectrum of activities, these include the following to develop their observational drawing and painting skills:-
- Printmaking-Styrofoam, line painting, dry paint etching, mono printing and silkscreen.
- Drawing-still life/pencil- shading and tonal work
- Photography
- 3D- Sculpture, relief
- Painting- oil/acrylic/gauache/watercolour
- Mixed Media- link and bleach
- ICT- Adobe Photoshop
- Fabric Painting
