Stewards became a Science Specialist School in September 2003. This has led to many developments in the Science Department and in other areas of the school. The Science laboratories have been refurbished and a further new laboratory will open in September 2005.

Great emphasis is placed on the use of ICT to enhance learning and teaching in Science. The use of laptop computers allows pupils to experience experiments in a controlled environment and to research information on topics they are studying. Simulations are used to demonstrate difficult concepts and the use of camera's and projectors ensures that every child can witness the demonstrations carried out by the teachers.

Two post doctorate graduates of Imperial College London have contributed to the development of teaching materials and have run a very popular Science Club alongside other staff from the department. Stewards Science staff are contributing material to the town wide Virtual Learning Environment which will be used by pupils in all schools.

Trips and visits to places of Scientific interest such as the Space Centre and the Science Museum have helped to show pupils that Science is a dynamic and fascinating subject.

Staff from the Science Department pay regular visits to primary schools to support the teaching of Science.
